How do I become a freelancer?

Explanation of how to register with the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) or how to apply for a VAT ID

Freelancing is possible in two ways. Ultimately, you decide which way of working best suits your personal situation. We will give you some extra information about both below.

📍Freelancing with Chamber of Commerce (KvK) registration

Do you want to get busy? Then you can register at the Chamber of Commerce.  You will have a place in the trade register, a Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number, VAT ID and a trade name. The advantage of a Chamber of Commerce registration is that it is easier to insure yourself and to close a business account. Registering with the Chamber of Commerce costs 50 euros. To set up a sole proprietorship, follow these steps.

1. Go to the website of the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) and click on register.

2. Choose as legal form: sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak).

3. Follow the steps and do the pre-registration.

4. Make an appointment at the location of your choice or complete the registration online.

5. Complete the registration. You are now your own boss!

📍Freelancing with VAT-ID

You can apply for a VAT ID from the Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst). You can submit the application by filling in the document 'Opgaaf Startende Onderneming'. The application must be sent by post to the tax authorities. Within two weeks, you will receive your VAT ID, an user name and a password by post from the Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst).
